CJA's Citizen Opposition
to Senate Confirmation
of U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch
as U.S. Attorney General

VIDEO of Senate Judiciary Committee's February 12, 2015 Executive Business Meeting

Senator Feinstein:  …I know of not one reason why Loretta Lynch should not be confirmed… Senator Leahy asked at the hearing, for those of you that weren’t there, and there were people there to speak in opposition and people to speak in support.  It was a long line and he said is there anyone who has testified who believes she should not be confirmed.   And not one hand went up.  So, there are no negative letters, it’s all positive.  ...Her prosecutorial record is unparalleled.  …And it goes on and on and on… I see nothing.  If someone can give me one reason why she should be held over, I’d like to hear it, but this woman has as close to a perfect record as I have ever heard in the six nominations that I’ve been on this committee for…

Senator Tillis:  …I’m looking at this like an executive job interview. I’ve had an opportunity to interview somebody, briefly, for a very important position, a very important nomination. And I ask questions and they weren’t, with respect to some of the members here who are talking about positions that, clearly, Ms. Lynch wouldn’t take that would satisfy us.  But I ask operational questions. I asked about the nominee’s position on some of the inspector general’s report about organizational issues and how she was going to deal with them.   I got non-answers to those questions, which is why I’m following up and asking for specific answers about how are you going to operate as a manager – not where ideological differences will exist, but how are you going to operate as the chief executive of the Department of Justice.  And I’ve done these sorts of executive interviews in my day job, I’m sure David, or Senator Perdue has, as well.  And when you have a nominee, or you have a candidate come in who doesn’t answer questions, you do follow-ups, you do vetting.  And if they can’t answer the question then you make a decision about whether or not they are right for the job as a manager.  And that’s the basis for my support of holding it over. I’m simply trying to do my job to do a thorough interview to make sure that we not only have somebody who has the legal mind, but also has the management wherewithal to manage a department that, in my opinion, has been mismanaged under the current leader….
